Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release

Fascia is the thin membranous tissue which permeates the human body. It is a connective tissue that surrounds muscles, blood vessels, and nerves, binding these structures together in a manner similar to cling-film. It consists of several layers: a superficial, deep, and visceral layer, and it extends uninterrupted from the head to the tip of the toes. The fascia can become restricted, hardened or dehydrated due to overuse, trauma, inflammation and/or surgical procedures. Fascia, like muscle, can contract and relax, but unlike muscle, fascial restrictions can gradually spread throughout the network building up over time, causing pain and restricting movement.

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying slow, gentle and sustained pressure into the myofascial layer to allow the restricted fascia to elongate and to mobilise adhesive tissues. It is a gradual, slow movement that should not be painful. Used in conjunction with muscle relaxing techniques, myofascial release is a highly effective way of relieving pain and restoring mobility.
